Speaker: Julia Weller, Made in Cumbria

Don extended a welcome to all and then introduced the speaker Julia Weller of Made in Cumbria who presented on the subject of ‘Network West’ Julia’s presentation is 26,000 KB and is available from the Chamber by request. (christine@cumbria.chamber.co.uk). These notes are supplementary to that presentation.
Made in Cumbria (MIC) has been in existence since 1989 and this year is
celebrating its 20th birthday. New members have to satisfy strict criteria.
1/3 of the membership is in the Food & Drink Sector.
1/3 membership is in West Cumbria.
MIC runs 60 farmers markets a year at 5 locations around the county. They
have recently introduced local food courts for direct consumption at farmers
markets.
MIC also helps with the organisation of country shows, latest one being the
Hutton Horse Trials
Also the new Fell Gather Event which attracted 5000 at Cockermouth in 2008
and will be running again in 2009. There will also be support for a new festival
in Whitehaven and showcasing at events in Liverpool, Manchester &
Newcastle.
MIC has successfully conducted a 5 year campaign to get the Cumberland
Sausage protected as a Food Name. It will be the first meat product in the
North of England to be protected.
Its best Cumberland Sausage competition has become an annual event in the
Cumbrian calendar. The final will be held at the Fell Gatherer Event.
The Taste of the Lake District ran 2 shows in 2007 that took sales at the rate
of £42,000 per hour.
Working with many event organisers, MIC increases the profile of Cumbrian
producers nationally.
On its web-site there is a business support directory and an on-line shop.
There is a calendar of Farmers Markets and a craft map. There is also a
gallery with links to members own web-sites.
A newer low cost affiliate membership has been introduced which is targeted
at support and service companies.
Also currently looking at the viability of a mobile shop.
Julia then took a series of questions from the attendees.
Q. Potential for a Farmers Market in Workington.
A. Possibility of doing something linked to the Paint the Town Red event.
There has to be sufficient footfall to get the producers to come along.

Q. Do you restrict the type of product at the markets?
A. Yes, no more than 2 of the same type.
Q. Is there more support for food than crafts?
A. No, because there are specific craft shows.
Q. What is the fee for stall hire?
A. Varies according to the event.
