Speakers: Michael Peet, Director & Principle Consultant and Peter Grisedale, Senior Fire Risk Assessor, Premier Risk Consultants.
Chair: Don Graham, Cumbria Chamber of Commerce.
Michael & Peter presented on the changes in legislation.
Their presentation is in the attachments below.
Under the old legislation the local friendly fire service acted as advisers and issued fire certificates. This was primarily for insurances purposes. Then new ‘stable door’ was enacted.
The local fire service are now enforcers and policemen for the new act.
Every building now has to have a fire risk assessment. This does not apply to domestic, off-shore, ships, mines, fields & woods.
There is a difference between audit & assessment. Audit is about compliance, assessment is about predicting the behaviour of fire and smoke in a building and the reduction of risk to human life. It is not about protecting the building.
Every building has to have a defined’ responsible person’.
There also has to be a Fire Safety Log. Premier Risk Consultants have provided a free template which is attached below. There Is also a company profile.
Further new legislation is due to become applicable from April 2009 with the introduction of the BS999 Code of Practice.
Michael and Peter responded to a number of questions put to them by the attendees.
There being no other business the meeting closed.
Next meeting 9th April 2009 at the Settlement.
Speaker: Richard Evans of Allerdale Borough Council on the Local Development Framework.
